1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church

church history

The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church of Chicago adopts the Baptist Church Covenant as follows:

“Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior; and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness; to give it a place in our affections, prayers and

services above every organization of human origin; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, toward its expenses, for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit, and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern.

We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the word of God; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ, and faithful in the service we promise others; endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith.

We further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort and stir up each other unto every good word and work; to guard each other’s reputation, not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other’s joys, and with tender sympathy bear one another’s burdens and sorrows; to cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the Saviour in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; and through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek to live to the glory of God, who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. When we remove from this place, we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s word.”

mission statement

The Mission of The 1st Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago is to:

Love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind and soul and to Love our neighbors as ourselves while fulfilling the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. By Exalting the Savior, Equipping the Saints, Evangelizing the Sinner, and Elevating our Surroundings. We will accomplish this mission by honoring God by making more disciples for Jesus Christ, reaching the people and their families of our local community, connecting them to each other and to the church; and equipping them through a process of intentional spiritual growth to serve the world in the name of Jesus Christ, as stated in Matthew 28:19-20:

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church

church history

First Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church was organized on December 9, 1951. At that time there was a faithful group of nine members who attended worship services at the home of Brother and Sister Woods, located at 4510 S. Forestville Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60653.

On January 9, 1952, First Mount Calvary M.B. Church purchased its first building at 4501 S. Princeton Avenue, Chicago, IL. The members elected Rev. J.P. Sloane as their pastor, and he served from 1952 until 1955. On April 24, 1955, Rev. Joseph E. Pilot was elected as pastor and served until 1957, and later that year, the call to pastor First Mount Calvary was extended to Rev. Samuel M. Hart who came from Memphis Tennessee to lead us.

Under his leadership, the church prospered, and membership increased, recognizing a need for a larger church home. On August 4, 1960, First Mount Calvary purchased and moved to its present church home located at 6111 South Kenwood Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637, (formerly owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints A.D 1929). The church continued to grow and prosper; the gospel was preached, and many souls were saved. Rev. S.M. Hart continued to pastor until his death on December 26, 1985. The Lord was with us; the late Rev. John Hooks, the Deacon Board, and faithful members kept the church in unity. On March 9, 1986, Rev. Franklin W. Williams was elected to pastor First Mount Calvary and under his leadership the church produced its first recording, “Thank You Jesus For My Journey.” Rev. F.W. Williams served until January 1996. On February 6, 1996, Rev. Aubrey D. Blake began his tenure as interim pastor of First Mount Calvary and was officially installed as the pastor on June 29, 1996. Under his leadership, we succeeded in the burning of the church mortgage in April 1999. In September 2003, Rev. Blake resigned as the pastor of First Mount Calvary; the members were without an undershepherd for the church’s 52nd Anniversary. On July 25, 2004, Rev. Robert A. Cain, Sr. answered the call to pastor First Mount Calvary.

In 2011, a new horizon was revealed, and the church name was changed to The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church. During this transition, we evangelized our neighbors and community with an Outreach Ministry that spread the gospel, and souls were saved. Rev. Cain served until 2015. On September 11, 2016, Rev. John E. Thompson, Jr. became the Senior Pastor of The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church. During his tenure, he inspired the church to grow in the knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ. Rev Thompson resigned as pastor in May 2020. The church was experiencing such difficult times with the decrease in membership, the deterioration of the church building, and the Covid-19 Pandemic; The Lord kept us. “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: The righteous runneth into it and is safe.” (Proverbs 18:10) The faithful members of The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church unified. Under the guidance and direction of our Moderator, Rev. Dr. Jarvis J. Hanson of The Greater New Era Baptist District Association of Chicago and Vicinity, we continued Sunday Worship Service at a temporary location: Meadows Eastside Community Resource Organization (MECRO) and then Nehemiah Grand Lodge of Chicago. During this transition, God blessed us with visiting Ministers who taught, preached, and encouraged us to stay together, stay faithful, and trust God.

On August 1, 2021, Rev. Dr. Odel Sterling III, began serving as Interim Pastor and officially became the Senior Pastor/Teacher of The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church on April 3, 2022. Under his leadership the exterior façade of the church building has been restored, a church brand (Logo) was created, and former and new members have joined and are serving. Rev. Sterling’s preaching and teaching have imparted a renewal of Faith and Hope (that is found in Christ Jesus) in the members of The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church. His motto is “Trust God, even when you can’t trace God, knowing He is up to something and it’s always for your good.” Our goal is to bring our church building back to a safe gathering place for Worship; Healing, Encouragement, Support, and Charitable services for the congregation and local communities for many more centuries to come.
