BIOgraphy

I was elected as the Senior Pastor/Teacher of The 1st Mount Calvary M.B. Church at 6111 S. Kenwood Avenue Chicago, IL. 60637 on Sunday, March 27, 2022. I served as the former pastor of Christ Life Redeeming Missionary Baptist Church, formerly located at 1130 W. 127th Street in Calumet Park, IL, where the organizer & executive pastor is Rev. Dr. Curtis L. Reed. I resigned as Pastor (December 8, 2019). I became a proud member on July 7, 2019, of New Nazareth M.B. Church 7933 S. Yates Blvd in Chicago, IL, where the Senior Pastor/Teacher is Rev. Dr. Jarvis J. Hanson – Moderator of The Greater New Era District Association of Chicago & Vicinity.

I served closely with the Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. A. Edward Davis Jr. of The St. John Missionary Baptist Church, at 211 E. 115th Street, Chicago, IL from June 2010 to February 2018 as an assistant to the pastor. I served in positions as the coordinator of The Brother’s Keepers Ministry (Men’s Ministry), Assistant Director of Ministries (D.O.M.), Sunday School, New Member’s Class Teacher, and Biblical Counselor. I was the steward over the Health Ministries (H.O.P.E., Bereavement, Survivors, Pre-Planning Funeral Services, and Nurses). My greatest love and passion is pastoral care. Pastor Davis allowed me to grow in this area by assigning me to visit the sick and shut-in, the bereaved, those who are hospitalized, and convalescent, as well as senior citizen homes. On Sunday, January 19, 2014, I was the recipient of the “Minister of the Year Award” of the St. John M.B. Church. I served as the recording secretary on Ministerial Ordination Ceremonies on September 26, 2010 (5 candidates), May 15, 2011 (1 candidate), and January 5, 2018 (2 candidates).

I was crowned as a deacon on February 14, 1992, under Rev. Richard Reaves, Pastor of Greater New Jerusalem M.B. Church of Chicago. While at Greater New Jerusalem M.B. Church, I served as a deacon for 13 years and taught Sunday school, Youth Church, Men’s Ministry, and Leadership Conferences and Workshops. I was often sent to represent the Pastor as well as the Church in various avenues and ventures. I worked with the Finance Committee and Trustees, as a representative of the Pastor and the Church during the negotiations to acquire land in Riverdale, Illinois. I, along with Myler Church Builders of Crawfordsville, IN presented the zoning and architectural plans to the Mayor and Village Trustees, to build Greater New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. I answered the call to ministry in July 2005 and was ordained on January 18, 2009.

From November 2011 to 2016, I became an Adjunct Professor with The Chicago Baptist Institute International of Chicago, Illinois, appointed by Dr. Carolyn Walker (Former Academic Dean) instructing on Christian Counseling, Introduction to Preaching, and Pastoral Theology. Later, I was appointed by Dr. Joseph L. Henry (Academic Dean) as Adjunct Professor of “Understanding The Bible” and New Testament Survey I (The Gospel and Acts).

In March of 1975, while attending Thomas Scanlan Elementary School (presently Songhai Institute) as a troubled and rebellious student of Mamie Till-Mobley’s communicative arts class, I was given the part of a tree in the play “The Brave Little Tailor – A Stitch in Time Saves Nine.” This was my first introduction to The Emmett Till Players. I received awards for best-supporting actor locally and on the national level. It was not until two years later that I was introduced to the delivery of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches. Initially, I received the speech “Mountain Top”, but didn’t like it because I exclaimed that I had never been to the mountaintop. I had a really bad speech impediment, which was stuttering, and I had a dream to speak one day without stuttering.

Mrs. Till–Mobley gave me the “I Have a Dream” speech and told me that I better know this and “Mountain Top” by the next rehearsal or she was going to give it to another student. Not only did I learn the speeches by the end of the week, but I also fulfilled my dream of overcoming my speech impediment. Upon reciting the speech in rehearsal in February of 1977, Mrs. Till–Mobley brought to my attention that it was the first time I did not stutter. And I have been speaking, teaching, ministering, preaching, lecturing, and counseling ever since nationwide.

Being an active member of The Emmett Till Players for over 40 years, my “I Have A Dream” has taken me to many places such as Washington, DC; St. Louis, Missouri; Little Rock, Arkansas; Nashville and Knoxville Tennessee; NAACP Hammond Indiana Branch; Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; Houston, Texas, etc. I am also featured in the book titled Death of Innocence: The Hate Crime That Changed America, The Emmett Till Story by Mamie Till–Mobley and Christopher Benson. Of all the lectures at learning institutions, seminars, and conventions, I must say that the greatest thing that I learned from Mrs. Mamie Till–Mobley’s life and being an Emmett Till Player, is that out of all the things you do in life “ONLY THAT WHICH YOU DO FOR CHRIST WILL LAST.”

I attended George Henry Corliss High School in Chicago, IL. I was very active in basketball and baseball, lettered, and excelled in football as well as drama. With a concentration in radio and T.V. broadcasting, I placed 1st place in The City Wide Radio Fair by submitting “The Interview of Mamie Till Mobley, mother of Emmett Till”. Upon graduating with a football scholarship I attended Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri with a concentration in Mass Communications. Later, I attended Master’s International School of Divinity (formerly Master’s Divinity School) in Evansville, Indiana where I graduated with honors acquiring my Bachelor’s of Practical Ministry (Biblical Counseling and Chaplaincy Ministry). I did not stop there. I attended Lake Charles Bible College in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where I graduated in December 2005 with honors acquiring my Doctorate of Ministry (Pastoral Ministry). In August of 2009, I graduated with honors acquiring my Master’s of Divinity (Church Administration) from Lake Charles Bible College. I have always worked toward being a better-equipped servant in the ministry therefore I am presently attending Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, Georgia in pursuit of a Doctorate of Biblical Counseling.

I am the proud parent of 4 children and 3 awesome grandchildren. I had a 16-year-old son, Jeremiah Sterling, who preceded me in death on July 15, 2010. I am currently an investigator and instructor for the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners in Chicago, Illinois where I have been employed for over 30+ years.
